Healthy and Handy: Hard-Boiled Eggs are the Perfect Snack for Days Out

Day outings around town are so much fun, but they also present a possible roadblock for weight loss or healthy eating. It is way too convenient to just grab fast food or junk food when hunger appears on an epic day out. In order to make healthy eating a sustainable way of life, we need to plan for the roadblocks and create solutions ahead of time. There are many creative, fun, and yummy healthy snacks that we can take with us on the road. I am going to talk about one of my favorites: hard-boiled eggs.

A healthy snack to take in your purse

Hard-boiled eggs are so filling, nutritious, and pretty easy to transport if you keep them in their shell until you are ready to eat them. Don’t forget to take along some sea salt (my favorite is Redmond’s Sea Salt). I like to use empty glass spice containers and fill them with sea salt to take in my purse. I even have a really embarrassing airport situation with sea salt in a glass bottle that my husband won’t let me forget about! Maybe one day, once we get to know each other a little better, I will tell you the story.

How to Prepare the Perfect Hard-Boiled Egg


  • Put some water to boil
  • Gently drop some eggs into boiling water
  • 8 minutes for a soft yolk
  • 9 minutes for a firm yolk
  • Immediately place in an ice bath for 5 minutes


Take the eggs (in their shell) in plastic baggies and peel right before eating to preserve them longer. Most importantly, don’t forget the salt!

Why does this snack leave me with energy?

Eggs are so very satisfying when you are hungry and need a snack to hold you over until you get home. Since they have both protein and fat, they will keep you full for a long time. There is no need to derail our health goals when going out, we just have to plan ahead of time.
